Communicating resilience through annual reporting

SunRice is one of the largest rice companies in the world, growing from a single rice mill in 1950 to operations spanning Australia, the US, the Middle East and the Pacific. Our challenge was to create an annual report that explained not only the company’s financial results, but also the intricacies of the business and its strategic direction. 

The solution

After five years of strong financial performance and market expansion, a range of external factors combined in 2017 to create a perfect storm for SunRice. Our role was to help communicate that, despite adverse conditions, the implementation of the company’s strategy was cementing a promising future for the Australian rice industry.

To clearly explain the strategy in terms that shareholders would understand, we created strategic infographics that detailed where we’ve come from, how we’re doing, where we’re going, our operating structure and our strategic goals. We used icons throughout the report to frame SunRice’s strategic priorities. We also bookended the business overview with a second infographic that explained a complex global supply chain. 

The result

The result was a report with a contemporary look consistent with the SunRice brand, which we have now carried across to the 2018 annual report and sustainability report.

The reports have received excellent feedback from a range of internal and external stakeholders – so much so that BWD was commissioned to produce a change management piece that simply and clearly explained SunRice’s five-year business strategy to its 2,100 employees worldwide.
