Growing an iconic business with purpose

Canon has always been a purpose-led business, guided by a corporate philosophy – kyosei – which means living and working together for the common good. BWD’s challenge was to structure, write and design a sustainability report for 2019 that encapsulated the kyosei philosophy and the latest in sustainability thinking.

The solution

Following a review of Canon Oceania’s strategy, company policies and recent sustainability initiatives, we grouped nine potential material topics under three primary drivers (People, Planet, and Product and services). Representatives from all three of Canon Oceania’s geographies – Australia, New Zealand and the Philippines – then participated in a workshop to prioritise and refine the topics that mattered most to the business.

The result

Five material topics were subsequently used to structure and inform the 2019 sustainability report under the umbrella of ‘growing our business with purpose’. Given the company’s pioneering role in the development of photography, a visually stunning report was a priority. Feedback suggested we duly delivered, with stakeholders remarking on the quality and beauty of the report.
