Refreshing the sustainability strategy of a global packaging leader

One of the world’s largest consumer packaging companies – with over 20,000 employees, operations across multiple continents, and products made primarily from renewable and recycled materials – engaged BWD to help refresh its sustainability strategy for the next three-year planning cycle.

The company had recently completed its first strategic plan and set ambitious 2030 goals, but needed to reassess its position, recalibrate its level of ambition, and align strategic initiatives with evolving business priorities, regulatory requirements, and stakeholder expectations.

BWD led the company through a structured strategy refresh process. We benchmarked its ESG maturity, identifying a 28% improvement relative to industry peers since 2022 while highlighting areas where further progress was needed. We facilitated a comprehensive SWOT update and engaged with department subject matter experts across supply chain, procurement, innovation, HR, communications, and finance to pressure-test priorities, surface resourcing gaps, and build ownership of strategy initiatives. The process connected sustainability objectives directly to the company’s must-win business priorities, – from operational excellence and cost discipline to growth and culture.

The outcome is a refreshed strategic plan for sustainability that establishes clear initiatives, ownership, resource requirements, and KPIs for the 2026–2028 period. It addresses critical areas including decarbonization, product circularity, sustainable forestry, disclosure readiness, and the integration of sustainability performance into standard business processes. The strategy positions the company to maintain its competitive advantage as industry expectations rise, while ensuring its public goals remain credible and achievable.
