Leading the way with nature strategy

Since 2023, BWD has delivered industry-leading nature strategy advisory services, aligned with the recommendations of the Taskforce for Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD). Our team has partnered with one of Australia’s premiere universities to deliver a world-first result.

In 2024, the University of Sydney engaged BWD to conduct its inaugural ‘LEAP’ natural capital assessment. The LEAP framework is recommended by the TNFD and has become the de facto global standard for assessing an organisation’s nature-related impacts, dependencies, risks and opportunities. BWD specialists designed a bespoke application of the LEAP: rigorously satisfying the recommendations of the TNFD; while tailoring the process to meet our client’s unique needs.

To assess the University’s full portfolio of urban- and rural-based campuses, research institutes and farming operations, we leveraged our in-house technical skills, including: the collection and analysis of client operational data, and biodiversity and state of nature datasets from multiple Australian and international sources; and detailed value chain analyses of high value-generating activities in its ecologically-sensitive farm operations. BWD’s industry-leading materiality methodology enabled a robust assessment of our client’s most vital nature-related risks and opportunities.

The project surfaced strategically-significant insights, which went on to inform the University’s publication in 2025 of its inaugural nature-related financial disclosures – the first university in the world to do so.
